Who are extinction rebellion?
Updated: Sep 27, 2020
Extinction rebellion have been in the news a lot lately, I'm here to give you all the facts so you can make up your mind on your about them on your own.
Their website states that " Extinction Rebellion is a politically non-partisan international movement that uses non-violent direct action to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency."
Now that's a lot of words so let me break it down, being a non-partisan movement means that they are not biased towards any political party. Their actions do not promote any political parties whatsoever. As an international movement they are based all over the world and by using non-violent direct action they state that they do not do anything to endanger the public.
Extinction rebellion claim to have 3 rules:
Tell the truth, they believe the government should declare a climate emergency.
Act now, if we act now they say by 2025 we can reduce greenhouse gasses emissions to net zero.
Go beyond politics, they say the government must create and be led by decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
Extinction rebellion have made themselves heard, over the years there have been mass breakout protests most of which have been peaceful and inspiring. They believe in their cause and they believe in our planet, which is something we don't get much of anymore. They have been a controversial movement for many years now, but since when did being controversial become the same as being wrong? The UK is nowhere near their target for 2025 but their hope for the planet is uplifting, their demands may not have been met but they are at least known. Extinction rebellion believe to rebel is the only way to make change
In their description they clearly state that they are a non-violent movement, however they have not always kept true to this statement. No life has ever been directly endangered due to protests or movements, by this I mean no XR (extinction rebellion) members have attacked anyone.
However, emergency ambulances on more than one occasion have been forced to turn around due to protests and road blockades and some would count this as endangerment of human life, even if they were not directly attacking them.
Furthermore, their have been times where XR members have smashed windows and although they say that they were careful not to put anyone's life in danger there are many who would count property damage as a violent act.
Extinction rebellion have admirable and inspiring core values that should be applauded and the change that they are trying to invoke is incredible, but their movement has crossed lines in their fight for the planet and that is why they have been making headlines. Their are two sides of their story so when making your decision about them try to account for all of the facts.
